10 Things to Check Before You Bid on an Auction

There’s something exciting about finding an item you want at auction. You spot it, decide what you’re prepared to pay and place your bid. But before you click that button, it pays to take a moment and check the details.

Whether you're buying furniture, technology, tools, collectables, clothing or something completely different, a few minutes of research can help you make a more informed decision.

1. Read the Entire Listing

It sounds obvious, but don't rely on the headline or a quick glance at the description. Make sure you take the time to read, and possibly re-read, the entire listing before placing a bid. The seller should provide important information about the item, including its condition, features and any relevant details.

Take your time and make sure you understand exactly what you're bidding on. If something in the description isn't clear, it's better to ask before bidding rather than discover the answer afterwards.

2. Check the Condition, Dimensions and Specifications

An item's condition can have a big impact on its value, particularly when you're buying second-hand. Check whether the item is new, used, refurbished or has signs of wear. Look for information about scratches, dents, damage, repairs or missing components.

Dimensions and specifications are also important. That bargain dining table isn't much of a bargain if it doesn't fit in your dining room, and the perfect-looking appliance won't be useful if it isn't compatible with what you need.

If measurements or specifications aren't provided, consider asking the seller in the ASK IT section on the time listing before you bid.

3. Look Closely at the Photos and Videos

Photos can tell you far more than a short description. Ever hear the phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words”? Look carefully at all the images provided rather than simply scrolling through them. Check the item's overall appearance and look for signs of wear or damage.

If a video is included, watch it as well. It may demonstrate how an item works or provide a better idea of its condition. Don't be afraid to zoom in. Small details in photographs can sometimes tell you something important about what you're considering.

4. Ask Questions Using ASK IT

Still unsure about something? Use the ASK IT section in the item listing to ask the seller a question before placing your bid. You might want to clarify the item's condition, ask for a measurement, find out what's included or check how a particular feature works. It's much better to get the information you need before bidding.

A quick question could give you the confidence to bid or tell you that the item isn't quite right for you after all.

5. Check What's Included

Make sure you know exactly what you're getting.

For example, if you're looking at an electronic device, are the charger and accessories included? If it's a piece of equipment, are all the components included? If you're buying a set, does the listing include everything pictured?

Don't assume that everything visible in a photograph is automatically included in the sale. Read the description carefully, and if you're still unsure, ASK IT before bidding.

6. Understand the SHIP IT or PICK IT UP? Arrangements

Before bidding, think about how you're going to get the item home.

Some items can be shipped, while others may be better suited to local pickup. Large items, furniture, bulky equipment and other oversized items can be difficult or expensive to transport. Check the listing for the available delivery or pickup arrangements and consider any additional costs.

If PICK IT UP? applies, make sure you're able to collect the item within the required timeframe and have considered how you'll transport it. The price of the winning bid isn't the only cost to consider, so factor in delivery or transport to your overall budget.

7. Consider Whether the Starting Price Represents Good Value

A low starting price can be tempting, but don't assume it automatically means you're getting a bargain.

Before bidding, do a little research. If you're unfamiliar with the item, check what similar products sell for, both new and second-hand. Consider the item's age, condition, brand and specifications. Remember that the starting price is simply where the auction begins. Other buyers may also bid, so the final price could be higher.

Knowing what the item is worth to you gives you a better idea of how far you're prepared to go.

8. Check the Auction End Date and Time

Don't forget to check when the auction finishes! An auction can be easy to forget about, particularly with our busy lives these days and if you're browsing several items. If you've placed a bid, keep an eye on the auction so you know when it closes.

This is especially important if you're interested in winning the item. If another buyer places a higher bid, you'll need to decide whether to bid again while the auction is still open. It can also help to add the closing time to your calendar or set yourself a reminder.

9. Set Your Maximum Budget

Before you start bidding, decide how much you're prepared to spend. This is important.

Having a maximum amount in mind helps you stay in control when the bidding gets competitive. Remember to factor in any shipping or pickup costs as part of your overall budget. It can be tempting to keep bidding because you're already interested in the item, but don't let the excitement of the auction push you beyond what you're comfortable paying.

10. Avoid Impulse Bidding

Finally, make sure you're confident before you bid. An auction can be exciting, and that's part of the fun. But it's still important to make considered decisions.

Ask yourself before bidding:

  • Have I checked its condition?
  • Do I understand what's included?
  • Have I considered delivery or pickup?
  • Am I comfortable with my maximum budget?

If you've checked everything and you're happy with your decision, then you're ready to bid!
